DAILY HERALD REPORTS: Lake Zurich warns of bogus roofing contractor ‘feeding frenzy’

By Bob Susnjara

Lake Zurich government officials are warning residents to be leery of bogus roofing contractors they say are seeking business from residents whose homes recently sustained hail damage.

Kyle Kordell, a management analyst and deputy village clerk for Lake Zurich, said in a release Thursday the community needs to be alerted about a “feeding frenzy” that’s occurred in neighborhoods since the April 12 hailstorm.

So-called roofing contractors have been going door-to-door circulating contracts to residents whose homes have visible damage, Kordell said. He said the deals often have not appeared to be in a resident’s best interest.

Kordell said many contractors seeking the roofing work are from out of state and have misrepresented themselves and their activities.

“In addition, they are not registered with the building and zoning division as licensed contractors to do the work they are saying needs to be done, nor are they registered with the police department as solicitors,” Kordell said. “Some of these solicitors are printing up business cards with fictional Lake Zurich addresses, portraying themselves as local contractors.”

Lake Zurich was among several Northwest suburbs hit by hail as severe thunderstorms rolled through the area late in the morning April 12.

National Weather Service spotters reported hail of 2-inch diameter in Algonquin and Barrington, 1.75 inches in Lake Zurich and Palatine, 1.5 inches in Carpentersville and Lake in the Hills, 1.25 inches in Huntley and Long Grove, and 1 inch in Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Hoffman Estates and Wheeling.

About 15 cars were reported damaged in the front parking lot at Motor Werks of Barrington as a result of the hail.

Chicago and Suburbs See More Hail Damage – September 2013

Throughout the Chicago area, residents have reported damage from the heavy rain, hail and windstorms last weekend.  You may have storm damage and don’t even know it!

Hail can do significant damage, leaving holes, cuts and fractures in shingles. Just because your roof looks fine and has held up through our big storms, doesn’t necessarily mean that it is. Most storm damage is typically not visible from the ground. In addition to ordinary forms of damage from hail or wind, problems can surface from clogged gutters and downspouts. If the storm water is not properly directed to an unblocked gutter/downspout system, damage often occurs to the roof, the soffit, fascia and even the exterior walls. By the time you notice evidence of any problems, severe damage may already have occurred.

If you are concerned about storm damage, please contact us today at 847.797.0404 or contactus@smartroofers.com to inspect your home or building.

GAF releases advisory on Hail Damage to Roofing

icon-master-elite

With the Chicago suburbs experiencing hail storms, GAF, North America’s Largest Roofing Manufacturer, has issued a Technical Advisory Bulletin on the subject of “Hail Damage to Low-Slope Roofing Membranes”.

Some common types of damage from hail storms to low-slope roofs include:

  • Membrane Bruising – hailstone impact often creates a depression in the membrane surface and can dispace the protective surfacing such as gravel, ceramic granules or reflective coatings.  Severe bruising can also crush underlying insulation.
  • Fracturing/Granule Surfacing Loss – hailstones can scour a roof surface and displace large amounts of protective granules.
  • Blistering/Splitting – blisters, splits, cracks and other premature deterioration of asphalt, modified bitumen, and certain composite type single-ply roof systems can occur.
  • Moisture Entry – immediate damage from a hailstorm can include cuts, punctures, or tears allowing water to enter the roofing membrane.
  • Damage to Metal Work and Skylights and Equipment – hail damage typically includes denting and impact damage to roof-mounted fixtures which can result in leaks.

Roof Hail Damage – Chicago

A third severe thunderstorm hit the Chicago area June 30th bringing hail and high winds that was sure to cause hail storm damage across the area. This comes after two severe thunderstorms the night before. There was widespread damage reported across the area where residents reported that there were golf ball sized hail stones reigning down.

The residents of these areas are always aware of the fact these thunderstorms can bring with them the kind of hail storm damage and roofing hail damage that can affect property values. Along with the hail, as much as 2 inches of rain was reported in some areas and the entire storm warning lasted for the Chicago area into the rush-hour.
It’s just this kind of event that makes the people living in these areas glad for the fact that they have SMART Roofing, Inc. on their side. They are experts when it comes to hail storm damage and they have a great reputation in the area as well.

Hail damage leads to expensive insurance claims. Hail accounts for more than $1.6 billion in damage per year, just in roof damage in the United States, according to the Federal Alliance of Safe Homes. When a storm hits your area, it may be difficult to see if the shingles on your roof have been damaged. However, there are some ways to determine if any damage has occurred.

How to Detect Roof Hail Damage

  1. Look at the drain downspouts around your house. If you see a high concentration of black mineral deposits around the downspouts, this may be a sign of damage to your roof.
  2. Check your gutters. If the metal gutters have dents or dings from the hail, there is a good chance that your shingles were damaged as well.
  3. Inspect the ceilings in your home for signs of a leak. This is evidenced by discolored patches or holes in the ceiling and the presence of moisture.
  4. Climb on the roof and check the shingles. The signs can be as subtle as a small dimple in a few shingles. If you suspect damage, consider calling a specialist to thoroughly inspect the shingles for you.
